No More Room in Hell 2 — Co-op, Matchmaking & Squads

No More Room in Hell 2 is built as an online co-op game — up to eight Responders in one mission, fighting the horde together. Here's how squad play actually works in 1.0.

How Many Players Can Play?

Online co-op supports two to eight players. Eight is the published maximum, not a required party size — you can deploy solo-with-others or with a full squad.

  • Solo mode is the single-player practice option (no progression, no permadeath) — it sits outside the online co-op loop.
  • Objective and Survival are the two main online modes, both built around 2-8 player co-op.

Public Matchmaking vs Private Lobby

When you queue, you choose the session type:

  • Public matchmaking — drops you into the wider player pool and fills your squad with other Responders (including randoms). This is "squad fill" — it's on by default in public sessions.
  • Private lobby — a party of at least two players matchmakes privately, keeping strangers out of the session. This is how you "turn off fill squad": form a private party with your friends before deploying.

Want to play only with friends? Create a private lobby (party of 2+) instead of joining public matchmaking. Squad fill only applies to public sessions.

How to Play with Friends

  1. Gather your group and form a party before starting matchmaking.
  2. Pick the session type — public if you're open to randoms, private to keep it in-group.
  3. Agree on the mode and difficulty before deploying. Difficulty changes both pressure and the cost of death, so a first-timer should know whether the group expects respawns or permanent loss.

Cross-platform friends can squad up through 1.0 crossplay (see our Crossplay page). Proximity voice chat makes first contact with randoms part of the experience.

Is There Local or Split-Screen Co-op?

No. Multiplayer in NMRIH2 is online only — there is no split-screen or local co-op on any platform. One person plays per device; everyone connects over the network. If you wanted couch co-op, the game doesn't offer it.

Friendly Fire & Squad Fill

Other players are allies, not enemies — there is no player-versus-player. On friendly fire, community beginner guides generally state there is no friendly fire in 1.0, so you don't need to worry about accidentally shooting a teammate in a tight corridor (treat this as subject to change per patch).

There is no documented vote-kick tool in 1.0. If a random teammate is toxic, your options are to leave the session or run a private lobby so randoms never join.

Can't Join Friends? Squad Fill Fixes

Common "can't join squad / failed to join" causes and fixes:

  • Version mismatch — everyone must be on the same game version (currently 1.0.4.0). A host on an older build can't pull in friends on a newer one.
  • Squad fill vs private — to join specific friends, they must invite you into their private lobby; public matchmaking won't drop you into their exact squad.
  • Crossplay pool — crossplay is on by default, but if a friend is on another platform, make sure crossplay isn't disabled in your settings.
  • Server region — matchmaking is region-aware; a friend in a distant region may not appear in your pool.
  • Console subscription — PS5 needs PS Plus and Xbox console needs Game Pass Core/Ultimate for online play; without it you can't join any squad.

What the Squad Shares (Supplies & Progression)

The team shares the mission and its Supplies target. At final extraction, a surviving player receives character XP and Credits calculated from the whole team's collected Supplies — so protecting the group's objective work pays everyone.

Your Responder's outcome stays personal. Early extraction can save a character from a doomed run but grants no character progression and only a small Credit share; final extraction delivers the full result. Death rules depend on difficulty: Beginner uses timed respawns, Normal brings you back after major objectives, and on Hard/Nightmare every death is final.
